What Are VOCs?

VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) are human-made chemicals that are used in the manufacture of paints, pharmaceuticals, refrigerants, cleaners, and other chemical solutions. VOCs are most commonly found in everyday household products.
VOCs are widely found in industrial solvents, such as trichloroethylene; fuel oxygenates, such as methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE); or by-products produced by chlorination in water treatment, such as chloroform. VOCs are often components of petroleum fuels, hydraulic fluids, paint thinners, cleaning agents, wood products and plastics. VOCs are common ground-water contaminants that can spread far beyond the original source.

Why Test For VOCs?

VOCs include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have both short-term and long-term adverse health effects including cancer, ENT irritations, headaches, kidney and liver damage, respiratory tract irritation, skin allergies, a decrease in cognitive ability, and other health related ailments.
Concentrations of VOCs are often up to 1000% higher indoors than outdoors. VOCs are emitted by a wide array of everyday products found in a household such as: aerosol sprays, adhesives, building materials, cosmetics, carpeting, candles, caulking and furniture finishes, cigarettes, dry cleaned clothing, home printers, household cleaning supplies, paint, permanent markers, vaping liquids, vinyl flooring and many others.
